From Classroom Farewell to University Adventures: Embracing a New Chapter

Image
(image generated via Night Cafe ai)      My last few posts consisted of me declaring that I was leaving/gone from the classroom for good. But then unpaid bills started piling up. Since that time I got a position as a part time instructor at a local university. Same same but different. So now some of my posts will be about my part-time instructor journey, now teaching mostly freshmen some university survival tips through experiential case studies, and teaching research and debate skills. They also learn to write papers and "try" not to use ai for help. I have to keep reminding myself that they are just a couple of months away from being high school kids, but I want to treat them like adults. This means that I still get excuses when work is not turned in on time, or when they decide to skip class. I just have to remind them of school policies, and that (sometimes) shuts them down, and usually ends with them whining under their breath. Then I have to remind them that ...

Teaching ChatGPT to High School Students: A Practical Guide for Teachers

Beginner's Guide to Teaching High School Students  How to Use ChatGPT Responsibly and Ethically Co-authored by Shondale Pagano and Google Bard October 6, 2023 Overview      Remember when there was a lot of bru-haha when calculators and graphing calculators came on the scene? Now, they are seen in most, if not all mathematics classes, used as a way to either check answers, or quickly arrive at answers. The key to using them is to UNDERSTAND THE EQUATION, or the type of input needed in order to derive the correct answer. This is what ChatGPT is, but on steroids. ChatGPT is an incredible Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot that can be used for a variety of purposes, including generating text, translating languages, writing different kinds of creative content, and now creating images from text. However, due to the temptation of easily getting homework done (especially essays and reports), it is important for students to learn how to use ChatGPT responsibly and et...

Free AI-Centered Lessons for Every High School Subject

Image
I just came across a great website that effortlessly helps educators effectively teach and learn about AI, and what's even better, is it's FREE. The resource/website, named CRAFT is a collaboration between classroom educators of different subjects and the Stanford Graduate School of Education, along with the help of the Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence department. Each lesson that was created by the teachers had to be written in a way that they could be adapted by any educator to use in any subject. Here is a screenshot of the first couple of lessons available, as well as the filter on the left. Why teach AI in the first place? First of all, students need to understand the difference between using AI as a substitute for their own writing, and using it to enhance  their writing. Educators are all up in arms about how students can and are using AI to cheat, instead of learning how to teach students how to ethically  use AI to improve their learning experien...

As an educator, you know that your job is never done. There's always prep work to be done, lesson plans to be written, emails to be sent, and papers to be graded. It can be a lot to juggle, and it's easy to feel like you're always running behind. But what if there was a way to save some of that time? What if you could use AI to help you with some of the more mundane tasks? That's where AI comes in. Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing the world, and education is no exception. AI-powered tools are now available to help teachers with everything from lesson planning to grading papers. Here are just a few ways that AI can help teachers save time: Lesson planning: AI can help educators create personalized lesson plans that are tailored to the needs of their students. It can also help educators find and curate educational resources, and generate engaging activities. Emailing: AI can help educators automate their email correspondence. For example, it can create te...
