Overview
Remember when there was a lot of bru-haha when calculators and graphing calculators came on the scene? Now, they are seen in most, if not all mathematics classes, used as a way to either check answers, or quickly arrive at answers. The key to using them is to UNDERSTAND THE EQUATION, or the type of input needed in order to derive the correct answer. This is what ChatGPT is, but on steroids. ChatGPT is an incredible Artificial Intelligence (AI) chatbot that can be used for a variety of purposes, including generating text, translating languages, writing different kinds of creative content, and now creating images from text. However, due to the temptation of easily getting homework done (especially essays and reports), it is important for students to learn how to use ChatGPT responsibly and ethically, because, afterall, ChatGPT is here to stay and impossible to regulate outside the classroom.
Getting Started
To get started, students should create an account on the ChatGPT website (chat.openai.com). Once they have an account, they can begin using the chatbot by typing in prompts or questions. ChatGPT will then generate text in response to the prompt or question.
Teaching Responsible and Ethical Use
Here are some tips for teaching high school students how to use ChatGPT responsibly and ethically:
Discuss the potential benefits and risks of using ChatGPT. Students should understand that ChatGPT is a powerful tool that can be used for good or for bad. It is important for them to be aware of the risks involved in using ChatGPT, such as the possibility of generating inaccurate or misleading information. Explain to students that ChatGPT doesn’t know how to say, “I don’t know,” and will often generate something made up, but completely believable because of the language and tone used in the output (this is called a “hallucination), even to the extent of making up “credible” sources!
Teach students how to evaluate the quality of ChatGPT's output. Students should not simply accept ChatGPT's output at face value. They should learn how to evaluate the quality of ChatGPT's output by considering factors such as the accuracy, completeness, and relevance of the information. Explain that ChatGPT is a language model that has been trained from billions of data sets. Students need to understand that these data sets are chosen by human scientists who may have implicit or explicit biases, which, in turn, create an AI that can have those same biases. Therefore, the output generated by the AI can be one-sided, which can be a dangerous road for a naive student to travel.
Encourage students to use ChatGPT in a creative and ethical way. Students should be encouraged to use ChatGPT to explore their own ideas and to create new and original content. However, they should also be taught to use ChatGPT ethically, such as by avoiding using ChatGPT to generate plagiarized content or to create content that is offensive or harmful.
Here are some specific activities that you can do with your students to teach them about the responsible and ethical use of ChatGPT:
Have students research the potential benefits and risks of using ChatGPT. Ask them to create a presentation on their findings, not forgetting to cite their sources.
Have students evaluate the quality of ChatGPT's output. Give them a prompt or question and ask them to write it themselves, then put that same prompt or question to ChatGPT to generate text in response. Then, have them compare/contrast and evaluate the quality of the text by considering factors such as the accuracy, completeness, and relevance of the information.
Have students use ChatGPT to create creative and ethical content. For example, you could have them write a poem, story, or script using ChatGPT. Or, you could have them use ChatGPT to generate ideas for a new product or service.
By following these tips, you can help your students learn how to use ChatGPT responsibly and ethically.
